Les Abeilles “The Bees” is named for the bees that inhabit the vineyards where this Côtes du Rhône is produced, and the Colombo family keeps their own beehives in the Rhône Valley. Honeybees pollinate more than 90% of flowering crops, however, because of “Colony Collapse Disorder,” bee colonies are in jeopardy. Jean-Luc Colombo will donate 10% of the net profits of Les Abeilles per year to UC Davis Department of Entomology for honey bee research. FUN WINE FACTS

"Old World" refers to the traditional regions of Europe, while "New World" refers to everything else.  New World regions are often warmer, resulting in riper, more alcoholic, full-bodied and fruit-centered wines. Old World wines tend to be lighter-bodied, exhibiting more herb, earth, mineral and floral components.

Pinot Grigio/Pinot Gris are made from the same grape. Pinot Gris from the Alsace region of France is typically rich and often sweet, with rich, spicy tropical fruit aromas. Pinot Grigio in Italy shows a lighter, crisp, clean and vibrant expression of the grape, with citrus flavors.

Syrah/Shiraz are the same grape.  Quite simply, Syrah is produced north of the equator, and Shiraz produced south of the equator.               

Monastrell/Mourvedre also the same grape, with Monastrell produced in Spain, and Mourvedre everywhere else.

Meritage (which rhymes with "heritage") refers to Bordeaux-style wines made in the U.S.  To produce a Meritage wine, the blend must be one of the estate's top bottlings. Red Meritage wine must be a blend of two or more of the five traditional Bordeaux reds (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec), and white Meritage is a blend of two or more of the three traditional Bordeaux whites (Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscadelle du Bordolais).
